By His Spirit is the third album by the American pop trio Silverwind (Betsy Hernandez, Patty Gramling, and Georgian Banov), released on Sparrow Records in 1985. The album was recorded by Skip Konte and Biff Vincent and was produced by John Andrew Schreiner with assistance from band member Georgian Banov. Mixed by Konte.
Few artists have utilized the synthesized technology of the ’80s better than Silerwind. ‘By His Spirit’ sounds absolutely contemporary, the production is superb throughout, and the lyrics are all carefully, lovingly crafted. Only the songwriting is suspect. When it’s good, it’s very good. And when it isn’t…
The good includes «Shout Hosanna», which joyfully describes Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. It’s buoyant, vaguely Latin-sounding pop with an irresistible verse. «Praise Anthem» is exactly that: the Doxology «Holy, Holy, Holy» up-dated for the ’80s. «Only Jesus» is a high-church ballad complete with a synthesized orchestra over a very simple melody line.
Less successful are songs like «Breaking Through», the title track, and «I Will Give Him Glory» where the verses sound like they were only written to kill time between the catchy choruses – or belong to different songs altogether. The problem here isn’t one of execution. Silverwind (Patty Gramling, Georgian Banov, Betsy Hernandez) makes even the lesser songs sound imposing. Rather, it’s one of material.
