Description
Playground is the debut album by the American jazz-rock group Razz, released on Exile Records in 1984, distributed by Lexicon. The album was recorded and mixed by Gord Driver at Whitefield Studios in Santa Ana, California; with Driver and band member Brian Sawyers producing. Music written by Brian Sawyers with lyrics by Chariya Keopke.
Featuring Chariya Keopke on vocals, Brian Sawyers on piano, Fender Rhodes and synthesizer, Troy Edmonston on tenor and alto saxophone, Troy Dexter on guitar, Ray Hurley and John Holt on bass (the former featured on tracks A1, A3, A4, and B2 and the latter featured on A2, B1, and B3), and Todd Voelker on drums and percussions.
This punchy, meaty jazz-rock album fills a void left by the demise of the late, lamented Seawind, right down to the funky horn charts. Of particular merit are keyboard player Sawyers and his pristine, ethereal «Ivory Rain». Razz plays structured jazz with overtones of Koinonia. [Bob Darden, CCM, May 1985]
