Description
My King is the debut album by the American techno project Raving Loonatics, released on N’Soul Records in 1993, distributed by Diamante Music Group. The album was recorded by Greg Hobgood, Scott Blackwell, and Mind Benders (a.k.a. Johann Fontamillas & Wilson Peralta) at N’Soul Studios in California; and was produced by Greg Hobgood, Mind Benders, Max Hsu, Steve Nixon, Zarc Porter (of World Wide Message Tribe), and Scott Blackwell.
Raving Loonatics is a project organized by Scott Blackwell starring a revolving cast of four “superhero cartoon characters” listed in the album sleeve: “MC Luv The Lord”, “Good Guy Guy”, “Rolf, The German Loopmeister”, and “DJ Bonus Beats”.
This was an album waiting to happen. Someone, somewhere, had to realise the potential that sampling has for the proclamation of the gospel. Scott Blackwell’s pioneering new label had shown the way to mix rave beats with sermons in his track «My King» (after which this album is presumably named) off ‘Walk On The Wildside‘ two years ago. But now Raving Loonatics have given us an entire album of the stuff. It’s all packaged in comic book pictures of the Loonatics who rejoice in names such as Rolf, the German Loopmeister and MC Luvthelord. Assisting them in their raving lunacy is an impressive list of producers which includes Greg Hobgood of Prodigal Sons, Britain’s Zarc Porter and, inevitably, Scott Blackwell. They’ve simply taken large chunks of sermons from their favourite preachers (E V Hill, Josh McDowell and Billy Graham) and positively plastered them all over the music. So don’t buy this album if you’re only into subtle Christian messages hidden low in the mix! It’s delightfully heavy stuff and, as you’d expect from such a distinguished list of preachers, most of the spoken material carries enough theological weight to demand repeated playing. This particular genre must have considerable mileage for many albums, blessing the socks off rave fans for years to come. In time, someone may do it even better than the Loonatics, but this album is the first of it’s kind and, as such, deserves all the attention it gets. [Karl Allison, Cross Rhythms, April 1994]
