Midnight Fire

Description

Midnight Fire is the sophomore solo album by the Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Randall Waller of Avion fame, released on the Canadian label Tunesmith Records in 1980. The album was recorded and mixed by Joe Bellamy at Peace in the Valley Recording in Arleta, California; and was produced by Larry Norman sideman Jon Linn with Randall Waller co-producing. All songs written by Randall Waller.

Featuring Randall Waller on lead vocals and guitars backed by the rhythm section of Ambrosia – bassist Joe Puerta and drummer Burleigh Drummond. Also featuring Richard Souther, Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Terry Clark and Chuck Girard. Tracks A1, A4, and B2 were also released on Avion’s self-titled album, the ones here are earlier versions of those tracks.

When I first saw the cover of Midnight Fire I thought maybe the hard-rockin’ Tunesmith label had goofed. Look at this guy: clean-cut, dressed-to-the-tee, that benign fireside pose – jeepers, it looked like a Dino album! Ah but look close – there’s an earring in that ear. A lot heavier than Oasis, Midnight Fire is good crank-it-up commercial rock balanced with acoustic ballads and light pop. Waller does most all the guitars, bumin’ up on tracks like «Lady Of The Night», «Mum N The Kids» and «Morning Star». Produced by Jon Linn with folks like Richard Souther, Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Terry Clark and Chuck Girard joining in on the fun. A few of these songs later appeared on the first Avion LP.
