Young and Free – This One’s for You, Jesus

Description

This One’s For You, Jesus is an album by the American folk/pop group Young and Free, released on FourMost ‎in 1972.

Young and Free features Marji and Ed Elzey on vocals, Jay Courtney on keyboards and vocals, Rich Flegle on bass and vocals, and Paul Wells on drums.

Not my favorite label as it tends to be dominated with slick easy listening Youth For Christ groups. Young And Free are similarly affiliated yet seem to have escaped some of the excesses of the movement. The music is the usual blend of folk, pop and light rock applied to cover songs («I Believe In Music», «Sitting At The Feet Of Jesus», «Look To Your Soul») but perhaps because this is an earlier release it has a thinner low-budget sound, more like just the band (four guys, one girl) and their instruments – and that works in their favor. The vocals are more natural, less polished and there’s no orchestration. The organ is used quite a bit, sometimes with an eerie effect (the slowed-down «They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love»), other times cranked up in rock mode like «Listen!» where they cut loose significantly. Even includes a substantial drum solo in «It’s A New World». Still some muzak wafts floating through here and there, but enough interesting things happening here to get my seal of approval.
