Description
One Way is the split debut album by the British folk groups The Right Angle and The Alethians (both groups featuring the British singer and songwriter David Pope), released in the UK on Myrrh Records in 1972, a division of Word.
Apparently David Pope had his hands in two bands at the time of this schizophrenic but interesting early Myrrh UK release. Each group gets an LP side, with The Alethians doing six songs of straightforward ‘60s folk – Peter, Paul & Mary with British accents. It’s quite nice – I like it better than RSVP (which it pre-dates). For Dave’s alter ego The Right Angle took the route of soft loungy jazz – background music for white tablecloth restaurants. It’s actually kind of fun and has a cool laid-back beat outta the ‘50s, without being overly schlocky. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
It seems that when this was released in 1972, David Pope was singing with two bands so each band gets a side of this vinyl release. The Alethians are a folky outfit although sometimes this verges dangerously close to skiffle! From the jaunty opener «Come And Go With Me» and «Darkness» with its mix of male and female vocals is reminiscent of Peter, Paul And Mary. It’s all very serious stuff and uncompromising in presenting a Christian message but with the primitive production, it hasn’t travelled well. Side two of the album is devoted to The Right Angle, again with David Pope doing the vocals. This time he’s fronting a set of lounge jazz songs which these days would be described as lift music. I want to whisper “nice” after each song has finished. «Questions» is the grooviest track here but sounds like it was recorded in the ’60s. Nice! Pope would go on to have many solo releases in the ’70s and found the Saltmine Trust after that. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, June 2011]
