Description
The self-titled debut album by the American folk duo Kerosene Halo (Derri Daugherty and Michael Roe of The Choir and The 77’s, respectively) was independently released on Lo-Fidelity Records in July 2011. The album features Derri Daugherty and Michael Roe on guitars and vocals, backed by Greg Kellogg on pedal steel, dobro, and harp, Mark Harmon on bass and Steve Hindalong on percussion. Simple. Sparse. Nostalgic. Gorgeous.
Featuring covers of “The Outlaw” (a song written by Larry Norman and originally recorded on his album Only Visiting This Planet released on Verve Records/MGM in 1972) and “And So It Goes” (a song written by Terry Taylor and originally recorded by his band Daniel Amos on their album Mr. Buechner’s Dream released on Galaxy21 Music in 2001), among others.
Michael Roe of the 77s and Derri Daugherty of The Choir join to form Kerosene Halo, trading harmonies and gentle acoustic strumming here as though they were playing in your living room. Nine cover tunes by the likes of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson, and others are squarely in the realm of the sometimes-country strains of the duo’s “other band,” The Lost Dogs, than anything resembling alt rock. Greg Kellogg’s pedal-steel licks breathe transcendence into the tracks. Poetic takes on Christian faith color most of the selections, with Larry Norman’s classic «The Outlaw» (about Christ’s earthly ministry) carrying the most biblical weight. Soothing and evocative stuff – perfect for an afternoon curled up on the porch swing. [Dave Urbanski, CT, July 2011]
