Vincent

Description

The self-titled and sole album by the Swedish pop/rock band Vincent featuring singer/songwriter Per Höglund was released on Alarma World Music in 1990, a division of Frontline Music Group, distributed by The Benson Company. (The original Swedish version of the album, entitled 1000 man, was released on the Swedish gospel label Cantio Records the same year.) The album was recorded by Mikael “Micke” Lyander and Johan Norberg at Sandkvie Studio in Visby, Sweden; May 1990, with Norberg and the band producing and arranging. Lead vocals co-produced by Eric Bibb (who also translated the original Swedish lyrics into English). Mixed by Lyander and Norberg at Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden; June 1990.

There must be a rule somewhere that ever since Steve Windwood broke the big time in America with his «Higher Love», European bands have to have a prominent Hammond B-3 organ and major R&B influences to their sound. Unless of course they’re metal, and Vincent, formely the Hoglund Band, is not metal. For its second American release, Vincent, a name that’s a much easier sell than its former title, provides a fun, pop/R&B approach similar to that of Winwood, that occasionally reminds one of the vocals of Little River Band.

Per Hoglund’s songs and voice are front and center, and delightfully so. And this Swedish band has little of that English-as-a-second-language residue that often makes cross-cultural efforts so strained. Soulful, approachable and sing-songy, Hoglund’s lyrics speak to all the difficulties and joys of life as part of God’s creation, with the tone set by the opening «Someone Who Never Says Goodbye». This is the kind of cultural exchange that offers real possibilities. [Brian Q. Newcomb, CCM, January 1991]
