Triumph

Description

Triumph is the second gospel album by the American gospel, soul and R&B singer Philip Bailey (best known as the lead falsetto of ’70s group Earth, Wind & Fire), released on Myrrh Records in 1986, a division of Word. The album was produced by Philip Bailey (with George Duke and Jerry Peters co-producing tracks A4 and B3, respectively).

Let’s face it. Very few men sound good when they sing in falsetto. Somehow, though, Philip Bailey not only pulls it off, but he makes it sound beautiful and natural.

In fact, Bailey never falters throughout ‘Triumph’, and the result is a more satisfying collection than his previous Christian album, ‘The Wonders of His Love‘. One of the keys to success this time is variety. On ‘Triumph’, Bailey has taken nine different songs by nine different songwriters and made them his own.

With nine songs ranging stylistically from the calypso-flavor of «The Other Side» to the joyous gospel sound in «Triumph», Bailey’s vocals keep all of them from straying too far. His seasoned voice is a joy to experience as he flows seamlessly through a song or peaks on high notes that most singers would strain to attempt.

It is not hard to feel the emotion behind «The Love of God» as Bailey’s voice soars through it. His sustained and resonant falsetto is perfect for «The Same Way (You’ve Always Been)» as it states its spiritual truth quietly and clearly, and «All Soldiers» becomes a true call to action with Bailey’s commanding cries.

Although known for his work with Earth, Wind and Fire and his successful mainstream solo outings, Bailey seems to have found a finer showcase for his emotional singing with his uninhibited approach to Christian music. [Bryan Munson, CCM, February 1987]
