Description
World’s Midnight is the sophomore album by the British gospel funk group Paradise, released on Ebony Records in the UK in 1982, and as well on Onyx International Records in the US, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was recorded by Rafe McKenna at Marcus Music U.K. (a.k.a. Marcus Recording Studios) and Gooseberry Studios in London, England; with Phil Saachi and Jon Astrop producing. Mixed by McKenna at Marcus Music U.K. Strings arranged and conducted by Chris Norton.
Paradise features Paul Johnson on lead vocals, Doug Williams on lead vocals and guitar, Phillip Edwards and Raymond Dennis on keyboards, David Aiyeola on guitars, Junior Edwards on bass and vocals, Bobby Clarke on drums, Karl Edwards on percussion, and Devon Burke on percussion and vocals.
Paradise is an impressive eight-piece band making funky soul music that could give Kool and the Gang a run for the radio airplay if they had the chance. The record is ‘World’s Midnight’ (Onyx Intl. R3808), which features 10 original songs by the band designed to move your feet as well as your heart.
The album’s production is admirable (by Phil Saachi and Jon Astrop), full of punchy bass and percussion that makes for a winning sound similar to the above-mentioned secular band, as well as other current black chart-toppers. The band is British, and the album was produced and manufactured in England. Paradise is a group we should be hearing more from, and ‘World’s Midnight’ is a classy debut.
