Description
More is the sophomore studio album by the American rock band Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart, released on Myrrh Records in 1983, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Joe Hardy at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; by Gary Ham and Will Eggleston at Crescendo Recorders in Atlanta, Georgia; and by Wally Duguid at Platinum City Recorders, with Hardy, Dean Harrington and Mylon LeFevre producing. Background vocals provided by 2nd Chapter of Acts and Jimmy Jamieson, among others. Featuring a guest appearance by guitarist Phil Keaggy on one track.
Has Mylon’s time come? That could very well be. His last album, ‘Brand New Start‘, was released by MCA Songbird, but that was about all. Proper promotion never backed what was one of the best albums of 1982. Songbird was going through the throes of dismantling, and Mylon was one of the casualties. Now comes his first LP with Myrrh, hopefully a well-backed and well-promoted release. Myrrh seems to be genuinely interested in the Georgia musician, indeed almost fascinated by his down-to-earth personality and music. If they follow through with ‘More’, it will prove successful – to them as a company, and to record listeners and buyers.
Mylon can rock, as fans well know. On stage, he can pull out all the stops and does. On record, though, he eases off a bit out of a perceived necessity; his music is less beat-oriented, even calming. The most passionate moment on ‘More’ is the title song, featuring nice acoustics and a memorable delivery. Myrrh has released «My Heart Belongs to Him» as the single, however, perhaps a second-best choice, which conjurs up reminiscences of the «Stranger to Danger» cut from his Songbird LP. There is a definite, identifiable thread of Mylon music floating through the repertoire here, and that signature is more than welcome. The 2nd Chapter of Acts back him up on «Praise Hymn», a nouveau classical reading a la Vangelis, and «The Gift», which immediately follows and is ably delivered vocally by Matthew Ward in one of his finest performances. Other guest musicians include Kerry Livgren and Phil Keaggy. For rock fans – especially of DeGarmo & Key lineage – Mylon gets the most progressive with «Free Man», a popular song at his concerts. Throaty Fleetwood Mac bass-guitar lines are highlighted on «Coming Back Again», another choice cut. Retailers should put stock in this one; Mylon is on the road quite a bit these days and continues to appear at numerous concerts and festivals. He will be one of the most visible and recognized artists among contemporary fans in the next year. [Paul Baker, MusicLine, July 1983]
