Brother to Brother

Description

Brother to Brother is a collaborative side project by the American singers/songwriters Michael Card and John Michael Talbot, released in the US on Myrrh Records in 1996, a division of Word. Released in Europe by Alliance Music. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic ‎Records, a division of Sony Music. This album is dedicated, with deep respect and affection, to Billy Ray Hearn.

Anyone listening to contemporary Christian music for any length of time will be familiar with the two artists paired for this recording. Both artists have built their musical catalogs on gentle vocal styles, acoustic arrangements and a purity of focus that seems to have transcended the “industry” of Christian music. Given that both parties admit to a long-standing mutual appreciation of the other’s work, one wonders why this ‘Brother to Brother’ project wasn’t recorded years ago.

With help from fellow members of the Covenant Artists Community – Wes King and Phil Keaggy – Card and Talbot have recorded new versions of each other’s most familiar work. John Michael Talbot sings «Come to the Table», «The Final Word», and «Live This Mystery», while Michael Card offers «One Faith», «Psalm 95» and «Healer of My Soul». The results make for an enjoyable, intimate listening experience. The songs come across as more than simply “tributes;” subtle re-writes and re-arrangements make these versions truly new. «Come to the Table» is now as much of a John Michael Talbot as it is a Michael Card song, and Talbot’s «One Faith» is tranformed by the guitar mastery of Card, Talbot, Keaggy and King.

For those who already own separate projects from Card and Talbot, this record is a must have. For those unfamiliar with the two brothers up till now, this project is a perfect, gentle introduction. [Scott Thunder, CCM, June 1996]
