Description
Thankful is the full-length debut album by the American contemporary gospel/R&B duo Mary Mary (sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina “Tina” Atkins-Campbell), released on Columbia Records in May 2000. The album was produced by Warryn “Baby Dubb” Campbell, except track 6 produced by Mary Mary and Tye-V Turman, track 11 produced by Rick “Dutch” Cousins and Campbell, and track 14 produced by Andrew Gouché and Campbell.
This young American female duo look set for big things both on the secular and gospel market. That’s because they have very attractive vocals and the use the very same musical styles and beats currently popular within secular R&B. But somehow, even though their lyrical content is very much gospel-based, they’ve managed to appeal equally to the secular market. For example, their first single, «Shackles (Praise You)», has been a big hit in America and a favourite among R&B fans in the UK. That’s been mainly through the support of the secular market. You have to hear funky cuts like «I Got It», «Joy», the Destiny’s Child-featured «Good To Me» and the rap-laced «I Sings», to understand these young girls’ appeal. They are no slouches when it comes to soulful ballads either – cuts like «Can’t Give Up Now», «What A Friend», or the velvety harmonies-backed «Be Happy» and «One Minute». They close by going very churchy on «Wade In The Water». I love acts like Mary Mary who can appeal to young gospel lovers and the secular market, where I’d argue gospel music is needed even more.
