Description
Some Kind of Wonderful is the third gospel album by the American singer, songwriter, and guitarist Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad fame, released on Frontline Records in 1991. The album was produced by Bill Baumgart.
Ah, this takes me back, mid 70s, more hair and Grand Funk Railroad, the band that spawned guitar hero Mark Farner. This is his third solo album for Frontline and is certainly a well polished project. Now I know that the title track is a cover of an old classic, but I just can’t remember who recorded the original. (I bet Cummings will know!) (I do, it was the Soul Brothers Six. Ed.) There is a general feeling of soul and blues to the whole album, Farner’s guitar work dominates and the lead breaks are breathtaking. Mark has found an excellent bass player in Lawrence Buckner, listen to the driving rhythm of the title track and compare it to the popping funkiness of «Love From Above» or the smooth runs in the chorus of «The Vision». There are a couple of tracks which could be described as fillers and the album is generally weak lyrically, with the certain exception of the final three tracks.
