Description
Time and Again is the sophomore album by the American pop singer Kim Boyce, released on Myrrh Records in 1988, a division of Word. Also manufactured and distributed by A&M Records. The album was recorded at Cat Head Studio in Los Angeles, California; and at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee; with Brian Tankersley producing for GBT Productions. Mixed at Mastermix in Nashville, Tennessee; and Rivendell Sound Recorders in Pasadena, Texas.
Featuring Brian Tankersley on keyboards, bass, and drum programming and George Cocchini on guitars with backing vocals provided by Chris Rodriguez, Judson Spence, and Jimmie Lee Sloas, the latter of The Imperials fame. “Save Me” is a duet with Jimmie Lee Sloas.
A great debut album is a tough act to follow, but Kim Boyce has succeded in not only matching, but also surpassing her first effort with ‘Time and Again’. This time around, Boyce and producer Brian Tankersley have resisted the temptation to follow the formula that worked so well on ‘Kim Boyce‘ and have opted, instead, to explore some new ground.
That is not to say that Boyce’s fans will find themselves in unfamiliar territory with this album – there are still plenty of Boyce’s trademark heartfelt ballads and feet-moving dance/pop tunes. The new ground covered is most noticed in the big, rich-sounding production; Boyce’s confident, dymanic phrasing; and the thematic maturity and style of the material.
Of course, an album is only as strong as its songs, and the team of writers assembled here have provided a collection of tunes which spring into full bloom under Tankersley’s skilled production and Boyce’s natural ability. Boyce is responsible for the lyrics of seven of the nine tunes. Other members of the writing team include Tankersley, George Cocchini, Lee, the Imperials‘ Jimmie Lee, and James Hollihan, who makes his presence known on «Stop Fighting» with hot guitar works.
Kim Boyce, the lyricist, gives the listener a glimpse into the heart and soul of Kim Boyce, the Christian woman. «Not for Me», with its “girl group” bgv’s and unique modulations, relives the woves of Christian/non-Christian dating, while «Lonely Man» is an encouragement to overcome the fears of real commitment.
As for Kim Boyce, the voice, she sounds better than ever and proves that she can handle the ballads and the boggie with equal ease; witness her spirited performance on the bass-driven remake of Rare Earth’s early ’70s hit «I Just Want to Celebrate». The funky duet «Save Me» pairs Boyce with Lee, adding him to her growing list of distingusihed vocal companions (which has included John Elefante and Carman in the past).
Danceable, fun; deep, moving – this album shows Boyce to be much more than a pretty voice. WIth great production and songs written with ministry in mind, Boyce’s second release will find its way into headphones and hearts – dare I say it? – ‘Time and Again’. [Jon Woodhams, CCM, April 1988]
