Description
Love & Mercy is the seventh studio album by the American singer Kathy Troccoli, released on Reunion Records in 1997, manufactured and distributed by Brentwood Music. Also distributed by BMG Distribution. The album was recorded by Leon Johnson with Peter Bunetta and Rick Chudacoff producing. Mixed by Eric Sarafin.
Kathy Troccoli is that she is consistent – consistent with her music, her message, her heart. And whether she is enjoying general market pop success or singing straight-up praise music, one can always count on her to deliver a heartfelt message packaged in either happy-go-lucky pop or feel it-in-your-toes ballads.
Troccoli’s new release, ‘Love and Mercy’, is no exception. On this, her eighth album, she stays on the track of outwardly expressing her faith while concentrating on the issues of, well, love and mercy.
The most noteworthy of such expression is «Love One Another», a song dedicated to raising money and support for a national AIDS organization, His Touch HIV/AIDS Ministries. The organization provides practical support for those with the disease. Forty Christian artists make an appearance on this tune, including Carman, Michael W. Smith, Carolyn Arends, Kevin Smith, Audio Adrenaline and Amy Grant, among others. And while the overdub narration in the middle of the song is a bit melodramatic, any group of Christians joining forces to lend support and compassion to AIDS victims is occasion enough to forget any negatives about the song and celebrate. Hallelujah!
«A Baby’s Prayer» is sung from the perspective of an aborted child seeking comfort, healing and forgiveness for her mother. Yes, it’s very sentimental, but for those who struggle with the guilt and shame of aborting a child it will quite possibly be a redemptive vehicle for the grief that has long eluded them.
The music on this project is pretty much in line with everything Troccoli’s done in the past but has enough new nuances that keep it from being stale. There are some string arrangements that are worthy of movie score status, and as always, her robust alto voice leaves the listener wondering how such a colossal sound could emerge from such a petite woman.
‘Love and Mercy’ is a pleasant follow-up to ‘Sounds of Heaven‘. It will be satisfying to her fans, and while it probably won’t go down in the history books as one of the greatest musical statements ever made, it will definitely make its mark. [Laura Harris, CCM, May 1997]
