He Walks Through Walls is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Julie Miller, released on Myrrh Records in 1991, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Buddy Miller at his home studio Dogtown Studio in Nashville, Tennessee; with Dan Posthuma, Buddy Miller, and Julie Miller producing. Additional recording at Whitefield Studios in Santa Ana and Garden Rake Studio in Sherman Oaks, California. (Additional engineering by Dan Garcia, Dan Willard, and Ted Spencer.) Mixed by David Leonard at Aire L.A. Studios in Glendale, Californa (except tracks 4, 7, and 9 mixed by Dan Garcia). All songs written and arranged by Julie Miller except track 1 co-written with husband Buddy Miller, and track 7, the trad. tune “Don’t Let the Devil Ride” (the latter featuring bluesy vocals by Rev. Dan Smith).

The debut album had all the hype and hoohah. Now the big question? Does the second deliver? The answer is emphatically yes. American journalist Kathleen Ervin has observed “In this second project, Miller settles down into some fine songwriting – good music that has little room for the all-too-frequent malady of Christian songwriting structure: conflict/confrontation/resolution – all in three verses and a chorus. Miller’s songs speak of someone in recovery – from life, the past, from pain – and the songs dare to throw out questions, problems even hints at unspeakable experiences into the open.” This soul stripped bare is in a setting of jangling guitar’s (The Choir‘s Derri Daughterly much in evidence) with harmonies as diverse as Kelly Willard and Mark Heard adding touches of musical class while that eerily nasal voice glides and flows across rhythms sometimes ’60’s throwback, sometimes folk roots, and always perfect to bring the pain and poignancy from a great singing and songwriting talent.
