Shadowdance

Description

Shadowdance is the solo debut album by the American singer and songwriter Jonathan Pagano of Novella fame, independently released on KingSing Records in 1994. Also released on Spark in Europe. The album was written and produced by Jonathan.

‘Shadowdance’ is the first solo album written and produced by Jonathan since he led the acclaimed Novella who in 1992 had three Dove award nominations. This is a treat of an album. Personal and reflective – many ballad influences to look out for include Billy Joel, Randy Stonehill and a contemplative Keith Green. The outstanding feature for me is Jonathan’s piano playing, at times reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby. This is a strong album to sit and relax to. Take a journey and meet Jonathan as he enables you to reflect on your relationship with God. Well worth a listen. [Alastair Wood, Cross Rhythms, June 1995]

Formerly the creative center of the now defunct rock unit Novella, Jonathan Pagano has streamlined his sound, and his name on his first solo release, ‘Shadowdance’. Although Novella did unplug for its swan song tour, some may be surprised by the acoustic tone of this record, especially since it is piano-based rather than guitar-based. Yet the real surprise is how stunning and succesful Jonathon is at artistic reconfiguration.

Obvious comparisons are to the early works of Billy Joel and Elton John and to the career of Keith Green. Along with impressive piano work and impassioned vocals, the lyrics are notably inflamed with a rejuvenated spiritual spark. The opening title track encapsulates the aforementioned strengths and sets the stage for many worthy companions such as «Under Reign», «Never Walk That Way Again», and «Forgiveness».

Infused with maturity – spiritually and artistically – ‘Shadowdance’ is a compelling statement that should not be overlooked. Jonathan eloquently presents all of his talents, writing all of the songs and handling most of the performing and production tasks and holds promise for what can be accomplished in the future. Already released and warmly embraced in Europe, ‘Shadowdance’ is only available in the U.S. at select Christian retailers and via mail order. Tapes and CD’s are $10 and $14 respectively (plus $2 S&H) payable to Jonathan, PO. Box 158825, Nashville, TN 37221. [Robert Mineo, Syndicate Magazine, #45, 1995]
