Silver Hand: Songs from Albion 2 is an album by the American singer, songwriter, keyboardist and producer Jeff Johnson & Brian Dunning, independently released on Ark Records in 1993. (Also released on R.E.X. Music featuring different cover artwork.) The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Jeff Johnson at The Ark in Camano Island, Washington; May 1992 – February 1993.
Johnson & Dunning’s second pairing, once again on the “soundtrack” to a Stephen Lawhead novel (the second book in the author’s ‘Song of Albion’ allegorical trilogy), is musically darker, reflecting the somber developements in Book Two. But you don’t have to have read either novel to appreciate the brilliant musical interpretations. The presence of fiddle by Scotsman Johnny Cunningham (formerly of Silly Wizard and Boston’s Raindogs and now with Dunning’s Nightnoise) and Dunning’s addition of uilleann pipes to his arsenal emphasize a more pronounced traditional Celtic flavor than the first installment. Equally as prevalent on this outing are Johnson’s progressive rock influences. A greater presence of percussion and occasionally more pronounced guitar in the mix often suggest the overtones of bands like the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull; Derri Daugherty‘s solo on «Flight of Ravens» even suggests David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd). These seemingly disparate influences keep the album consistently interesting and find us already looking forward to next year’s conclusion. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, August 1993]
