Description
Hunger for Reality is the sole album by the Canadian singer and songwriter Jane Edward, released on the Canadian gospel label New Born Records in 1980, a division of Praise Industries Corp. The album was recorded and mixed by Tom Trefethen and Scott Hendricks at Peace in the Valley Recording in Arleta, California; and at Glaser Bros. Studio in Nashville, Tennessee; with Al Perkins and Greg Nelson producing. Arranged by Nelson and Richard Souther. Featuring a cover of “Hey There Stranger”, a song written by Tim Sheppard and originally recorded on his 1979-album, Songtailor.
‘Hunger for Reality’ is a collection of north-country-rock-gone-pop that may appeal to those who once enjoyed some of the more upbeat tunes once sung by Joan Baez, Janis Joplin and numerous other less familiar (but no doubt more appropriate) female country vocalists.
Vocally, Edwards is not particularly impressive, but at least she has not fallen into the light-cheesecake-and-powdered-sugar mold of too-many female vocalists in Christendom. Although Edwards’ heavy vibrato style and low alto range may not appeal to some, they do contribute to the boogie style of «I Wanna Tesify», «Dedication Blues», and «Searchin». Otherwise, this album is adequate but uneventful.
Producers Al Perkins and Greg Nelson were significant contributors to the quality of this album, as were arrangers Nelson and Richard Souther (who, along with Mitch Humphries, added the appropriate keyboard riffs.)
