Waiting for the Sun

Description

Waiting for the Sun is the solo debut album by the British singer and songwriter Iva Twydell of After The Fire fame, released on Profile Records in 1978. The album was recorded and mixed during the summer of ’78 at Profile Studios in Wheathampstead, Herfordshire, England.

Sometimes listed as a solo album by Iva Twydell, the flute player and one-time drummer for After The Fire. This is a British based Christian themed album containing 12-songs ranging from lively folkrock to melodic soft rock to sensitive ballads to vaudeville novelty. Twydell wrote all the material using the name I A J Twidell and supplies the lead vocals along with 6 and 12-string guitar, flute, string synth, drums, and percussion while assisted by Dusty Miller (electric guitar) and Robert Michael (bass). The music is a top-notch mix of UK progressive folk and rock that pleasantly recalls the more acoustic elements of Jethro Tull and in a completely different style from Iva’s 80s techno albums, Secret Service and Duel, though the bratty Ishmael-like «This Thing’s Gone On Long Enough» comes pretty close. More common here, the tracks are based on an acoustic rhythm guitar framework supplemented with electric guitar leads, as on the title track and «Come Up Smiling». Othere songs like «Old Fashioned Dreamer» and the Tull-ish «The Carpenter’s Son» achieve their mood with just acoustic guitar. Nick Battle of ATF assists on a couple of tracks (backing vocals, violin). One of the more elusive albums issued on the small Profile label, which, according to a source, had a press run of only 100 copies. This was also reissued in the UK on CD by Kissing Spell in 2000.
