Holy Ground

Description

Holy Ground is a praise & worship album by the British singer, songwriter, and worship leader Ian White, released on Kingsway Music in 1993 (as a part of the label’s The Worship Leaders series). The album was recorded at at ICC Studios in Eastbourne, England; with Les Moir producing. Arranged by Dave Clifton, Stuart Townend, and Moir.

Featuring Ian White on lead vocals and acoustic guitar backed by session musicians such as Neil Costello on classical and electric guitars, David Fitzgerald on saxophone and flute, Chris Redgate on oboe, and Martin Neil on drums and percussion. Also featuring London Community Gospel Choir.

I predict this will soar to number one in the praise and worship charts and I doubt whether a better, more musically adept and Holy Spirit-anointed album will emerge from Britain or America’s worship song factory for a long while. Cross Rhythms has long been an admirer of lan’s ‘Psalms’ albums, but nothing quite quite prepared us for ‘Holy Ground’. From the glorious R&B-tinged «May The Peoples Praise You» (I loved David Grant’s scatting on the close!), the exquisitely worshipful «Lord You Have My Heart» (where Nannette Welmans and Helen Burgess do the most soul-sweet harmonies this side of Heaven) and song after song where Ian, sounding even more like Cliff now that he’s got First Division production (nice one Mr Moir), directs his heart and soul towards a holy God. All the husky expressiveness of lan’s voice is caught on these skilfully arranged songs while seldom has Scripture come so compellingly alive as on these joyful outpourings of praise and tender-hearted calls to worship. A mighty album. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, August 1993]
