Gang Affiliated is the debut album by the American hip-hop group Gospel Gangstas (feat. Chille-Baby, Meech, Mr. Solo, and Tik Tokk), independently released on their own label Holy Terra Records in 1994, distributed by Benson Music in the US. Also released on Myx Records the same year, a division of Frontline Music Group, distributed by Diamante Distribution. The album was produced by D.J. Dove for Holy Terra Productions.
True gangsta rap takes no prisoners and makes no apologies. ‘Gang Affiliated’, the debut record from Gospel Ganstas, trashes the entire joint with musical and lyrical credibility. But these boys are out for much more than justifying their past lifestyles and methods of communication.
Fifteen rap tracks and two mini interviews with the band balance out nicely. Kickin’ grooves like the «O.G.G. Intro» and «Mobbin’» are offset by the humor of tracks like «Da Gangsta’ Prayer» and the smooth yet heartrending «Before Redemption». In this cut an unregenerate gang member laments finding no way out of the hood. For thousands of people that is the plain and simple truth.
After tearing down any doubt with their bottomless bass, Mr. Solo, Chilly Chill, Tic Toc, and former S.F.C. member D.J. Dove go where, in my humble opinion, no Christian rappers have gone before – the heart and soul of gangsta rap. You might not like the lingo, but you better believe these guys have a heart after evangelizing their brothers and sisters lost in the hood. As former members of the Bloods and the Crips, these guys have translated their culture into a powerful message that will speak to the gang member. So much for marketing.
