Description
An Evening in December, Volume Two is the second Christmas album – as well as the fourth album overall – by the American vocal trio First Call (Mel Tunney, Bonnie Keen, as well as Marty McCall of Fireworks fame), released on DaySpring Records in 1987, a division of Word.
An Evening in December, Volume Two is the second of three Christmas album by the group, An Evening In December: A Cappella Christmas and Beyond December being the first and the last, respectively.
First Call follows up their wonderful ‘An Evening in December, Vol. I‘ with the second offering of the same name (‘Vol. II’). This entirely a cappella album can fool you into thinking there’s full orchestration at times – that’s how rich these vocals are, supplemented with guest appearances by Russ Taff, Wayne Watson, Tanya Goodman, and Cynthia Clawson.
«Angels We Have Heard on High» sparkles with breathtaking vocal work, as does «Carol of the Bells», which was tailor-made for First Call. «Tennessee Christmas», the Amy Grant/Gary Chapman tune, loses something here without the blanket of instrumentation. So do others – «White Christmas», for one. The gems are the carols and traditional songs. For fireside cocoa-sipping, this one can’t be beat. [Steve Rabey, CCM, December 1987]
