Dove

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American folk-rock band Dove was released on Myrrh Records in 1972, a division of Word. The album was produced by Billy Ray Hearn. All songs written by band member Bill Landers. Dove (catalog number MST-6507-LP) was the eighth album released on Myrrh Records, Word’s first – and at the time brand new – contemporary music label.

Early Myrrh co-ed group with appealing mix of folkrock, ballads and rural acoustic rock. Songs like «Exit» showcase fine acoustic guitar work ala Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. «The Dirty Dozen» is a solid up-tempo track with electric guitar and harmonica. Lighter mood for the jangling folkrocker «Hand Grenades And Horseshoes». Piano ballads like «What Good Is» (with a touch of mellotron) and «Super, Super Star» hold up well. «Love» closes out the album, quiet at first, building to a fairly loud climax. I don’t think Bob Farrell was in the group yet – I don’t recognize him on the back cover. Not as rockin’ as their second LP, but definitely aglow with the whole mid-‘70s Jesus music sound, great m/f harmonies, untarnished by strings, horns and all that. All songs written by Bill Landers.
