Speak

Description

Speak is the debut album by the American rock band Dogs of Peace, released on Sparrow Records in 1996. The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Jeff Balding with the band co-producing. Dogs of Peace is a band project by session musicians Gordon Kennedy (guitar, vocals) and Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass, vocals), former members of White Heart and Imperials respectively. Also featuring Blair Masters on keyboards, John Hammond on drums and Eric Darken on percussion.

If you play this album through once and like it, wait until you’ve heard it three or four times – you’ll be completely hooked. The Dogs Of Peace are Gordon Kennedy (guitars, vocals) and Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass, keyboards, vocals) – two names very familiar to inlay-freaks like myself. These ubiquitous Nashville session musicians have come up with an album that is diverse but distinctively their own. The sound is 90’s alternative rock with some brilliant guitar work and vocal harmonies. Earlier influences do shine through – “They sound a bit like Pink Floyd in parts,” commented my wife and who am I to disagree? The 11 (check out the bonus track) songs cover a range of subjects and moods but the standout cut has to be «Do You Know?». At well over six minutes long it provides good VFM but, more importantly, it has one of the best two and a half minute guitar solos that you are ever likely to hear. Buy this album immediately but don’t expect your other CDs to get a look in for a while. [Dave Harris, Cross Rhythms, August 1996]
