Deeper: The Definitive Worship Experience

Description

Deeper: The Definitive Worship Experience is a double disc compilation album by the British pop-rock band Delirious?, released in the UK on Furious? in 2002. Also released in the US, manufactured and distributed by Sparrow Records, distributed by Chordant Distribution Group.

Someone once called Delirious? the flag bearers for a generation. Nice enough perhaps, but to those who choose to listen they’re more like the baggage handlers.

From church halls to stadiums, home recordings to national airplay, part time hobbies to life’s body of work… but the numbers, the chic, the polish are all unimportant: what has been truly impressive about Delirious? journey so far is their, well, it’s their journey…

In 1994 the band’s first incarnation – known then as the Cutting Edge band – provided left of centre worship for a hometown event. Looking back it’s no surprise the direction in which the band travelled, as the crowd in those days was a mixture of church kids keen for something new and bemused locals loving the atmosphere without fully knowing why. It was there that songs like «The Happy Day», «I Could Sing of Your Love Forever» and «Lord You Have My Heart» first saw the light of day. They are the songs that tell the story of passion and excitement, the songs of innocence.

The songs got out, the buzz turned into an epidemic and Delirious? was formed. Singles were released, albums too, and by 1997 the whole thing had gone international. The journey offered tracks like «Deeper», «Sanctify» and «History Maker»: songs that added massive doses of ambition and confidence to the intimacy of the early work. These are the songs of a people in the move, the songs of optimism.

With more album came more success. New countries were visited, new friendships formed and the Delirious? message caught the attention of an intrigued media. And the songs? From the hushed truth of «Jesus’ Blood» to the intense vulnerability of their latest album ‘Audio Lessonover?’ Delirious? have made camp once more. They may be a long way from home, but the surroundings are strangely familiar: the honesty, the passion. Yet things are a little older now, a little more well travelled, worn in over years of heavy use. These are the songs of reality and struggle, of determination and resolution, these are the songs of experience. [A note printed on the back of the CD]

Best get this out of the way first, this is NOT a “best of” album, but as the sub-title suggests, a worship collection. So, what do you get for £15? The 25 tracks on two CDs include three new recordings of classic Delirious?, one being the recently released single «I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever» and, love it or hate it, there’s a remix of the «Happy Song». The other tracks are taken from a period prior to the ‘Glo‘ album, with one exception, the all new anthemic «Not Forgotten» making great use of a choir to lift the chorus. As a long standing Delirious? fan I find myself torn between feeling cheated by an album that contains mostly previously released material and loving the mixture of new and old, spanning a period of 10 years of the band’s history. My overall feeling though, is that this is a great album for anyone to add to their CD collection. And for the doubting d:fans? Just kick back and chill out to CD2, the best playlist of d:worship material heard in a long time. There is no doubting the passion of the full-on Delirious? when you listen to this CD. Something which has not come across so well in recent releases. Worship runs through Delirious? like Little Hampton through a stick of rock. “Flag bearers for a generation” indeed! They were most certainly born to kiss his feet. [Chris Sharp, Cross Rhythms, May 2002]
