Dreams, Tales & Lullabies is the third album by the American singer and songwriter David Edwards, released on Light Records in 1985. The album was produced by Barry Miller Kaye. Featuring The North Wind Chamber Ensemble arranged and conducted by Andrea Saparoff. Billboard Magazine‘s gospel critic Bob Darden wrote that “Dreams, Tales & Lullabies happens to be one of the best, most literate and most important albums of the year.”
Following his first two new wave/powerpop albums David Edwards released a third LP entitled Dreams, Tales & Lullabies featuring lyrics based on the literature of the Christian theologians and fantasy authors George McDonald and C.S. Lewis. The music is slower and more quiet and sounds like something Terry Taylor or Randy Stonehill would release. David Edwards would later compose music for the classical music field.
Before there was a Steve Taylor or Undercover, there was David Edwards. After two exceptionally literate new wave albums, Edwards lay low for a time. Now that everybody’s doing new wave, he returns with a classical children’s album for adults. I think. But if it is a children’s album, then, forgive me, it’s the best I’ve yet heard. And if it isn’t a children’s album, then that’s fine, too.
Using songs, lyrics, and even adaptions of prose passages from the likes of C. S. Lewis, George MacDonald, and his own books for the text, Edwards has created a lovely, lyrical collection of modern lullabies with a timeless, ethereal feel. The music ranges from the likes of 20th-century composer Jeffrey David Hooven to the 19th-century German composer, Engelbert Humperdinck. All of these are sweetly, carefully, lovingly performed. Note: Simultaneously released on cassette and 12-inch vinyl LP by Light Records. Later re-issued on CD. A Companion Story Book written by David Edwards was also published, as well as a Dreams, Tales & Lullabies Songbook (with simple piano arrangements of the songs, along with lyrics, chords, and program notes in a printed, comb-bound book).
