Description

Lift Him High is a praise & worship live album by the British singer, songwriter, and worship leader Dave Bilbrough, released on Kingsway Music in 1994 (as a part of the label’s The Worship Leaders series). The album was recorded live at the Dolphin Centre in Romford, England (Live PA provided by BHSS, operated by Steve Hartley and Dave Gregory). Produced and mixed by Neil Costello at the “music shed” in Derby, England. Edited by Dave Aston at the Digital Audio Company.

Featuring Dave Bilbrough on lead vocals and acoustic guitar backed by a live band featuring Steve Criddle on keyboards; Geraint Watkins on accordion; Dave Clifton on acoustic guitar, mandolin, and mandola; Jean-Pierre Rudolph on violin, mandolin, tin whistle, and penny whistle; Tim Harries on bass; and Terl Bryant on drums. Backing vocals provided by Julie Costello and Mal Pope.

Thankfully avoiding the temptation to call this Roots Praise, Kingsway offer the finest album in Dave’s patchy recording career. The back sleeve blurb attempts to flag down purchasers with the sentence “Dave Bilbrough returns to his acoustic music roots with a live album of congregational songs, set against a backcloth of Celtic and cajun influences”, which sums it up quite well save for the cajun nonsense. (‘Lift Him High’ does feature some hot accordion playing from Geraint Watkins but is light years away from the Sound Of French Louisiana.) Dave’s immersion into folk-tinged acoustics is a joyful success. Even songs previously heard in non-roots settings like «How Wonderful How Glorious» take on a delicious new groove with a mandolin driving it along while much of the new material is high on memorability.
