Cadet

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American pop-punk band Cadet was released on BEC Recordings in 2001, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. The album was produced by Neill King.

Featuring Ryan Smith on lead vocals and guitar, Jason Kennedy on bass and background vocals, and Chad Basom on drums and background vocals.

Three piece American power pop punk trio, with a decidedly retro ’60s beat, Cadet deliver a refreshing mixture of poppy harmonies, energetic guitars and plenty of melody to make a bright intoxicating sound. From the opening «Speed Of Sound» it’s clear that this is more than the usual bunch of kids trying to knock us over with the loudness of their playing. Instead you get enthusiasm, fun but no cheese and a pile of three minute shots that leave you wanting more. Surfer pop for the noughties, Cadet even manage to serve up a cover version of the old Monkees hit «I’m A Believer» that made me smile. Embellished by some scarily jolly keyboard sounds augmenting their guitar, bass and drums combo, standouts include «Fantasy» and the punky «Talent Show». More new wave power pop than old school punk, Cadet put some welcome subtlety into the mix and thus set themselves apart from the crowd. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, July 2001]
