Promise of Love

Description

Promise of Love is the sole album by the American melodic rock band Brighton (fronted by David Brighton), released on Pakaderm Records in 1991, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was recorded by Mike Mierau and Dino Elefante, assisted by Jeff Simmons, at Pakaderm Studios in Los Alamitos, California; and was produced by “The Pakaderm Company and David Brighton.” (“Curse the Night” recorded by Randy Thomas at Allies Recording Studio.) Mixed by Dino Elefante and Mike Mierau “using the Eventide H-3000 Pakaderm Custom.” All song written or co-written by David Brighton, except the Lennon/McCartney classic, “Any Time at All”. CCM Update described the album as “Pakaderm Power Pop… hook-laden tunes laced with flower-power vocal harmonies… commercial appeal that could spell crossover.”

Brighton features David Brighton on lead vocals and guitar, Mark Robertson on bass and vocals (later a member of This Train), and Steve Latanation on drums and vocals. The album also features Denny Bouchard on keyboards, Dave Wronski and Dino Elefante on guitar, with backing vocals provided by John Elefante and Linda Elias.

The non-album track “Stay With Me” was included on the multi-artist sampler Twelve New Faces, released on Myrrh Records in 1989.

Brighton, a promising pop/rock unit that first appeared on a Myrrh sampler, breaks out with a fresh-sounding debut, thanks to Christian rock’s busiest production team, John and Dino Elefante. Strong melodies and fairly accessible pop delivery place Brighton on the lighter end of Pakaderm’s heavier new bands, Guardian and X-Sinner. A cover of Lennon & McCartney’s «Any Time at All» is a real treat, and David Brighton’s personable voice on his own material should go long way toward pleasing Christian pop radio formats. This one’s a great, summer fun, car tape. [Brian Q. Newcomb, CCM, November 1991]

Brighton – Promise of Love (independent cassette-only demo album, 1990)

Yes, this is the same Brighton that released Promise of Love through Pakaderm Records in 1991. In fact, 7 of the 8 songs here went on to be on that album. Only «Women With Guns» remained on this demo. This demo is so well-recorded, I was not really sure if the major label release wasn’t just this demo released with three new songs added. But listening to the label release, there are slight differences between those songs and the versions here. A lot of big names worked on this as well: Rick Elias produced two songs, Randy Thomas (of Allies and Sweet Comfort Band) produced four songs, and Linda Elias provided background vocals on one song. The sound on this is sometimes described as AOR, which is a good start, but fans of pure AOR might not find this as interesting. I hear some power pop and alternative rock leanings as well – not to mention a slight Rick Elias Americana influence here and there. If I were to more honestly label this, I would lean towards the alternative crowd than the AOR crowd. [Christian Tape Underground, July 21, 2018]
