Description
Renaissance by Death is an album by the American thrash metal band Betrayal, released on Wonderland in 1991, a short-lived sub-label of Word run by Caesar Kalinowski (the man behind labels such as Graceland and Intense). The album was recorded by Caesar Kalinowski and Christopher Mosher at The Sonic Temple in Elgin, Illinois; with Caesar producing.
The band featured Chris Ackerman on vocals, Matt Maners and Marcus Colon on guitars (with the latter also providing backing vocals), Jeff Lain on bass, and Brian Meuse on drums. Keyboards provided by Christopher Mosher.
Trivia: Betrayal was a forerunner of technical speed metal. The band was formed early on as Martyr and after a few personnel changed their name to Betrayal. Their first album, Renaissance By Death set the standard for thrash metal and soon after they released their second album The Passing and then disappeared, but not before making a major impact on the Christian Metal market. Both albums were originally released on Wonderland Records who also owned Intense Records (Vengeance, Sacred Warrior, Deliverance) before selling it off to Frontline Music.
If you were wandering around the dark hinterland of the LA metal club scene in May you’d have caught this team opening for secular thrashers Entombed. These guys deserve a bit of attention for to these grizzled ears they’re a vastly superior band to overrated and overexposed US bands like Vengeance Rising. ‘Renaissance By Death’ has a set of dark and sombre songs like «Stroll Through A Wicked Age» and «Assassin In The Midst» a pretty tough line in surging rushes of angry sound and ably demonstrate that not all US metalers are bent on becoming AOR pretty boys.
