C’mon Along

Description

C’mon Along is the third gospel-oriented studio album by the American singer and songwriter Barry McGuire, released on Sparrow Records in 1976. (When Myrrh label head Billy Ray Hearn left to start Sparrow in the mid 1970’s, McGuire followed Hearn.) The album was recorded by Wally Duguid at United Western Studios in Hollywood and at Location Recording Service in Burbank, California; with Barry McGuire and Richard Souther producing. Mixed at Frog Shoes. Arranged by Souther.

Featuring “Clouds” and “Crosses In The Sand” written by Rob Mehl as well as a cover of “Follow The Light”, a song written by Randy Boldt and originally recorded by his band Children of the Light on Anyone But Jesus (a multi-artist live recording from a Barry McGuire TV show, released on Masterpeace in 1976). (Barry McGuire recorded his own version of “Follow The Light” for the C’mon Along album, which got enough airplay that Sparrow Records signed Children of the Light.)

A move over to the Sparrow label didn’t seem to hurt Barry none. C’Mon Along is another fine work in the same mould as Lighten Up, where rockers like «Peppermint Candy Man» and «Let The Dead Bury The Dead» are balanced with moody loner-vibe acoustic ballads such as «Sometimes I Cry» and «Whom The Gods Would Destroy». Some light country touches via Al Perkins’ pedal steel and dobro along with Doug Dillard’s banjo, as heard on «Clouds», «Crosses In The Sand» and «Follow The Light». Background vocalists include Matthew Ward and Terry Talbot. Co-producer Richard Souther provides keyboards while Mike Deasy returns on guitar. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
