Angelica

Description

The self-titled debut album by the Canadian hard rock/metal band project Angelica (the brainchild of Canadian guitarist/songwriter Dennis Cameron) was released on Intense Records in 1989, an imprint of the Frontline Music Group, releasing FMG’s industrial/metal output. The album was recorded by Dave Jahnsen and Eric Kibby at The Mixing Lab A in Garden Grove, California; with guitarist Dennis Cameron producing. Vocal production by Ken Tamplin.

Introducing a new guitar hero: Dennis Cameron. Dennis holds his own against such players as Rex Carroll, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (Just one listen to his instrumental track, «Ahh!» and I think you’ll agree.), but what really makes this tape stand head and shoulders above the crowd is the voice of guest vocalist Rob Rock (ex-Joshua). Ken Tamplin (Shout) did a fine job producing the vocals and even sang on one cut, «Face to Face».

The result is a melodic blend of electrifying guitars and hooky choruses. Dennis is a good songwriter.

One highlight is «Are You Satisfied?» with some insightful lyrics about the spiritual state of a fallen friend: “We were once the same/ when we called upon His Name/ Was the calling just too hard/ for you to stay… Seven wonders/ Seven Wishes/ Seven ghosts in you.”

I predict this will be the sleeper metal album of the year. [Doug Van Pelt, CCM, October 1989]
