Description
Father is a studio album by the British singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Adrian Snell, released on Myrrh Records in 1990, a division of Word. The album was produced by Stephen Pierre Boyce-Buckley and Adrian Snell. Includes a re-recording of the title cut from Snell’s 1976-album, Goodbye October.
Europe’s most popular Christian music artist has always made it easy for his legions of fans. His symphonic leanings, his love of poetic imagery, the demanding sweep of some of his concept works, have meant that not all his albums attract a casual listener. But on this album, despite being another concept work there’s a fresh accessibility to go alongside the dazzling musicianship. Exploring, as it does, the link between the love of our earthly and Heavenly Fathers, and specifically examining Adrian’s own relationship with his late father (and one time Bishop of Croydon), Geoffrey Stuart Snell, the album is a compelling and poignant musical statement. In the superb intertwining of classical elements with some sparkling synths and drum programming (courtesy of co-producer Stephen Boyce-Buckley) the songs and instrumentals have a resonance and coherence. There’s not a hint of maudlin introspection, not an iota of indulgence. In its breathtakingly beautiful moments, of which there are many, Father emanates a luminous joy which shines like a torch in a mine shaft. All in all, it is a recording overflowing with the warm security and everlastÂing hope only found in the arms of the Father. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, July 1990]
