Plugged In is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Randy Matthews, released on Spirit Records in 1981, distributed by Hartsong Corporation. The album was recorded and mixed by Tommy Semmes at Scruggs Sound Studio in Nashville, Tennessee; with John Thompson producing.
Featuring The Randy Matthews Band: guitarist Allen Holmes and a rhythm section consisting of David McCaskell on bass and Louie Weaver on drums (the latter soon to become the drummer of Petra).
The artistry of Randy Matthews has progressed to the point that he can easily be considered one of the best contemporary rock performers in Christian music.
Plugged In (Spirit, ND-3011) has everything going for it – well-crafted tunes (written mostly by Matthews and his guitarist, Allen Holmes), fine musicianship (his own band, not session players), excellent production (John Thompson), and, of special note, great, gravelly rock vocals by Matthews.
For rock fans, I can’t think of anything this album really lacks. Even the LP’s two ballads are rock’n’roll. As a whole, the album is musically satisfying and lyrically challenging. What can I say? I like it.
