Description
The self-titled solo debut album by the American singer and songwriter John Michael Talbot of Mason Proffit fame was released on Sparrow Records in 1976, distributed by Word Records. The album was recorded January 14-19, 1976 by Terry Jamison at Golden Voice Recording in South Pekin, Illinois; and was composed, produced, and performed by John Michael Talbot. Mastered by Lanky Linstrot at A.B.C. Records in Los Angeles, California; assisted by Al Perkins.
The album was included among Harmony Magazine‘s Best Albums of 1976, a list of ten albums featured in issue No. 11. (“Harmony picks Jesus Music’s best of ’76” – “Regardless of music style, “the best” were picked on the basis of their ability to communicate beyond the four walls of the church.”)
Some of Jesus music’s best acoustic rock around can be found in the first two albums from the post-Mason Proffit pre-Catholic John Michael Talbot. His debut album is an acoustic guitar feast – a rare treat for a Christian label, as Talbot’s professionalism from years in the secular music industry is obvious. Bass, drums and occasional electric guitar fill out the sound, although a few songs like the convicting «Would You Crucify Him?» achiever their mood with acoustic guitar backing. Some of that progressive country-rock attitude from the Mason Proffit years carries over onto tracks like «He Is Risen» and «How Long?». Side two’s center-piece is «Greenwood Suite», consisting of three parts and clocking in at just under thirteen minutes. Talbot’s personal testimony is included on the back cover. Nothing at all like the moody somber folk of his later recordings as a Franciscan monk. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
