So Much 2 Say

Description

So Much 2 Say is the sophomore album by the American a cappella gospel music sextet Take 6, released on Warner Alliance in 1990, the CCM division of Warner Bros. Records.

The success of Take 6’s debut album in the general marketplace is unparalleled by any Christian artist singing explicitly gospel lyrics. In addition to that album, the a cappela sextet has shown up on any number of well-known mainstream and Christian artist’s albums as background vocalists, and a number of their videos as well.

Ironically, the group’s success and acceptance in the contemporary Christian music market has not been as impressive, due perhaps to a lack of understanding of the musical idioms (traditional black gospel quartets, doo-wop, vocalese, and other jazz vocal groups) incorporated in its style. At its worst, this relegates Take 6’s music to novelty status, a label which would be a tragedy indeed, since this group embodies everything contemporary Christian music was developed for in the first place.

The dedication of these six men to artistic excellence, musical innovation, and the presentation of the Gospel through its lyrics, infuses every note of Take 6’s second album, ‘So Much 2 Say’. After a reprise of its “tuning up” intro, the title track is launched like vocalese lightning, hearkening the best work of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. After a humorous spoken intro (lots of humor – musical and otherwise – on the album), the first single and video, «I L-O-V-E U» hip-hops with the best urban music in today’s charts. And yes, all of the percussive sounds on the track are made by the human body. «Something Within Me» is a spiritual in the Jester Hairston vein, with Mark Kibble stretching out on lead vocals that recall Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers, and take such an approach into the ’90s.

«The Savior is Waiting», first heard on ‘Our Hymns‘, has been included and retitled here as «Time After Time». The group’s purest vocal arrangements is features on «Come Unto Me», with singing so smooth, your parents will think they’re listening to the Haven of Rest Quartet. But even here, a listen between the lines will clear up that confusion, due to the sophistication and complexity of the arrangement. «I’m on My Way» is almost as mellow, but with a brilliant bass line worthy of serious investigation.

Contemporary Christian music fans will no doubt love the sextet’s take on Carman’s «Sunday’s on the Way», which recalls the storytelling style of «David and Goliath» from the first album. After another comedic intro («That’s the Law»), about the “illegal use of instruments,” Take 6 concludes the album with what may be a hint at a new direction for its next project. «Where Do the Children Play?» either includes actual instrumental tracks, or these guys have bamboozled me completely. Anyway, it’s a fine closer, and could serve to open up even more possibilites for six young artists that appear capable right now of almost anything. [Thom Granger, CCM, October 1990]
