Any Starlight Night

Description

Any Starlight Night is the fourth studio studio album by the American singer and songwriter Billy Crockett, released on Urgent Records in 1991, distributed by the Benson Music Group. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Billy Crockett. (Digitally recorded, mixed and mastered.)

It’s fitting that Billy Crockett’s latest album cover should be named after a painting by an 20th century American artist. Any Starlight Night by Georgia O’Keeffe was one of many works that expressed the master’s profound creativity and love of life, much as Crockett has himself done on this, his second Urgent Records release.

Overwhelmed by the Southwestern summer night sky, Georgia O’Keeffe stroked a canvas with liquid color and caught creation in her brush. So it is with Any Starlight Night. Crockett has painted pictures with words on a canvas of music – simple, spare, with muted tones and subtle shadings of light.

I could have asked Crockett to explain what he meant to say in some of his songs, like the haunting «Elena» or the mystical «The Dance». Even a look at the accompanying press release may have given some explanation, but I just didn’t want to know. That’s because Billy Crockett, long known for his amazing technical skills on guitar, has finally expressed himself as the artist he is. And art is much better enjoyed by listening to one’s own emotional responses and drawing one’s own interpretation of the work.

How does it make you feel? What more do you know about life after seeing a painting? Those are the kind of questions Any Starlight Night should bring to mind. It’s not like a photograph. There are no pat answers. But it’s not all serious or ethereal, either. Billy (with the vocal help of labelmate Bob Bennett, among others) wraps truth with wry humor in «Big Rubber Bumper», and just plain fun with «Bogart’s Independence».

Crockett produced, recorded, and mixed this project almost single-handedly, which adds even more credibility to the artistic endeavor. How did it make me feel? Glad to be alive. Pierced with the bittersweet reality of life’s pain. Grateful for the mercy of God. I know more of what it means to live because I listened. And isn’t that what art is all about?
