Description
Behold the Man is the sole album by the American soft rock band Zion featuring Rich Mullins, independently released in July 1981.
Although Zion might best be described as a soft rock/ccm band, they are definitely more sophisticated than most as evidenced on this well produced custom obscurity. I’m sure a lot of their appeal is due to the presence of member Rich Mullins, later to become a huge name in Christian music circles. Mullins often brings artsy classical influences to his compositions, a prime example being the majestic piano intro on the opening track «Praise To The Lord» (Amy Grant would soon popularize the piece on her Age To Age album). In addition to piano, Mullins sings and plays guitar and dulcimer, joined by band members Jenny Filson (vocals, synthesizer), Tom Weimer (vocals, guitars) and Beth Snell (vocals), with other musicians providing bass and drums. Nice mix of uplifting tunes: the folksy dulcimer track «For Unto Us», the rich moving piano ballad «The Way To Love You» with gorgeous female harmonies, the dreamy acoustic «You Can Live Without», the light disco/pop bounce of «Nothing In This World». A good example of non-schmaltzy non-namby-pamby CCM. Beautiful b&w sleeve art featuring three ancient prints of Christ just prior to his crucifixion. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
