Description
Simple Truth is the eighth studio album by the British singer Sheila Walsh, released by Myrrh Records in 1989, a division of Word. The album was produced by Greg Nelson. Featuring “Quiet Times” written by Chris Rice.
Sheila Walsh’s new album, her third for Myrrh Records, is full of surprises. First, the woman billed as Christian music’s most famous British export has just recorded her latest effort in Nashville, TN. Second, the producer is Greg Nelson, best known for his work with Sandi Patti, Larnelle Harris and Steve Green. This should not be interpreted to mean that this album is awash in heavy MOR orchestrations and 15 modulations in every song, however. Rather it continues a path to a kinder, gentler sound that Walsh started in earnest with last year’s ‘Say So‘ LP.
Perhaps the most pleasant surprise here is how Nelson’s production brings out the lovely instrument, Walsh’s voice really is, and the fine job she does interpreting a song. Fans of Walsh’s new wave-tinged early releases will probably miss the pyrotechnic performances that characterized those albums, but most would agree that she has truly found her niche in this setting.
Walsh contributes to the writing, along with Bob Farrell and Greg Nelson, on «Come Into the Kingdom», and «Love Alone». The Michael and Stormie Omartian and fellow Brit Chris Eaton each provide one song, and Walsh does a rendition of Neil Diamond’s «This Time», which she dedicates to husband Norman Miller. The highlight, though is probably Larry Bryant‘s «Soli Deo Gloria», featuring a tight horn section and some broad-shouldered bgv’s arranged by David Maddux.
‘Simple Truth’ reveals a woman of God with a heart for ministry. But, then again, that comes as no surprise. [Jon Woodhams, CCM, September 1989]
