High Winds White Sky is the sophomore album by the Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bruce Cockburn, released on True North Records in 1971. The album was recorded November 1970 through April 1971 by Chris Skene at Thunder Sound and Eastern Sound in Toronto, Canada; with Eugene Martynec producing. Mixed by Henry Saskowski at Thunder Sound. All songs written by Bruce Cockburn.
CD re-issue, 2003
In 1971, Cockburn was still a couple of albums away from embracing Christianity and this mystical acoustic release bears some comparison to early ‘70s Van Morrison in the spiritual explorations and soulful acoustic styling. Maybe it was just a hippie hangover but Cockburn’s songs seem packed with nature imagery and a delightful innocence. Despite the wintery cover photo, there is plenty of warmth here in songs like the humorous «Happy Good Morning Blues» and the wistful «One Day I Walk». There are even a couple of bonus recordings of what could be the earliest live recordings of a very young Bruce. Although he would soon shed his pastoral folkie image and fly from the pigeonhole that others placed him in, ‘High Winds, White Sky’ is still a rustic delight. Note: Simultaneously released on cassette and 12-inch vinyl LP by True North Records with the vinyl edition housed in a gatefold jacket. The original vinyl release included a small booklet containing the lyrics to the songs in Cockburn’s handwriting and more of the pictures from the photo shoot for the album cover. Taken by photographer George Pastic on a snowy day on Ward’s Island in Toronto Harbor, the images make a great addition to the album package. They weren’t included in the original CD re-issue of the album and the booklet was neither included in later pressings of the vinyl album.
