Cruisin’ is the third solo album by the British singer and songwriter Chris Eaton of Mark Williamson Band fame, released in the UK on Alliance Music in 1997. Released the following year in the US by Cadence Communications, manufactured by Warner Alliance, re-titled What Kind Of Love and featuring new cover artwork as well as a bonus track, “It’s A Beautiful Day”.
It’s amazing to think that when Chris Eaton has penned so many of the top tunes for other artists that this is only his third solo album! The follow up to 1995’s exceptional ‘Wonderful World‘, this is no less remarkable! It shows Chris in more of an “up” mood celebrating life. If you’re used to Chris doing his intimate piano/vocal performances you’ll be in for a surprise to hear him rocking out on «Ordinary People»! At the other extreme, he’s almost as laid back as Leon Redbone on the fun’n’free summery title track! Yes folks, it’s Chris Eaton like you’ve never heard him before! From the enigmatic opening of «Old Friends» and its shuffling beat through the amazing «Boat Of Devotion» featuring Iona‘s Troy Donockley adding the Celtic thing (surely a Christmas hit single, if only EMI could be persuaded to release it) there is a huge vibe on ‘Cruisin”. «That’s What Faith Is For» has an optimistic feel and soulful groove and bv’s whereas «God So Loved The World» is closer in mood to «Wonderful World» with its simple devotional approach, and «Shooting Star» is reminiscent of «Westworld». That gives you a feel for where Chris is coming from musically and of course vocally, that distinctive soaring, sweeping, breathy style is still firmly in place. Without doubt, he is one of Britain’s truly underrated singer/songwriters. Surely if he just keeps on making fabulous albums like this, that’ll all change! [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, October 1997]
