Paid on the Nail

Description

Paid on the Nail is the third solo album by the British singer and songwriter Graham Kendrick with Peter Roe, released on Key Records in 1974. The album was recorded by Gerry Kitchingham and Helmut Kaufmann at R.G. Jones Studios in London and Echo Studios in Eastbourne, England; with John Pantry producing. Paid on the Nail was voted the second best album of its year in a Reader’s Poll conducted by Britain’s gospel magazine Buzz.

Featuring Graham Kendrick on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by Peter Roe on Moog synth, Ken Freeman on string synthesizer, Nick Ryan on bass, and Mike Wade on drums.

The album was a landmark in Kendrick’s ministry. It continued the acoustic/folky style which had been Kendrick’s hallmark in his earlier recordings but also introduced a wider variety and subtlety of arrangements and other instruments (Peter Roe played the Moog synthesizer). The songs were written while Kendrick was part of a team ministry called ‘In the name of Jesus’ who engaged in evangelism and church renewal around the UK.

“Caiaphas and the Temple Guard” and “How Much Do You Think You Are Worth?” were re-recorded by Kendrick in 2004 for his album Sacred Journey and in 2010 for The Acoustic Gospels, which also features a re-recording of “Beautiful Night”.

These songs are written in the quieter moments of what has been a very hectic life as part of the team ministry called ‘In The Name of Jesus’, who are engaged in evangelism and church renewal in the villages, towns and cities of the British Isles.

Becoming part of a team ministry has been a priceless experience. It has often proved painful too, but then the love of Christ came not without pain for it led Him to the Cross. Taking His example, we have had to begin to learn how to share ourselves, to love one another, to walk ‘in the Light’ together, that in the words of Jesus, ‘By this will all men know that you are My disciples if you have love one for another’.

Together we have just begun to venture on the holy ground of the Kingdom of Heaven, seeking to become a little more worthy of the title under which we minister, ‘In The Name of Jesus’.

I hope the music brings you a little more of Jesus.

Graham Kendrick [Album liner notes printed on the back of the LP sleeve]

Paid On The Nail pairs Kendrick’s vocals and acoustic guitar with the moog synthesizer of Peter Roe, plus bass, piano and drums. Similar pop-minded acoustic folk-rock spirit to Bright Side Up, approaching a slightly more intense rock style for «Caiphas And The Temple Guard» and «When The World Said No». Plenty of Kendrick’s trademark melancholy ballads, including «How Much Do You Think You Are Worth?», «Comforting Stranger», «You’re The Perfume I’m The Jar», «Love Is In The Things You Make» and «Make It Soon». Brisk lively moods are expressed on «Beautiful Night» and «Silence Reigns/Hosanna». Written while Kendrick was involved in a UK evangelistic team ministry called In The Name Of Jesus.
