Description
Sing a New Song is an album by the British folk-rock group The Settlers, released on Myrrh Records in 1972, a division of Word. (It is actually a BBC recording released on Myrrh by arrangement with BBC Radio Enterprises.) The Settlers were a folk-oriented group from England formed in the mid-1960s who released a handfull of albums on labels like Decca Records and Columbia Records. The year following the release of Sing A New Song the band’s lead singer Cindy Kent released a solo album entitled I Am Your Servant on York Records.
Trivia: In the late 1960s The Settlers worked together with Cliff Richard. The final session of 1968 and the first in 1969 saw Cliff record songs for the Tyne Tees Television religious series Life with Johnny, which was a modern retelling of the parables, with Cliff in the tite role. Among the songs recorded for this TV series was “Love Is More Than Words”, a duet with Cindy Kent of The Settlers. The songs was recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios in December 1968 and featured the other three members of The Settlers as well (Mike Jones, John Fyffe, and Geoffrey Srodzinski). “Love Is More Than Words” was one of the many recorded by Cliff Richard at Abbey Road, possibly with a view to releasing, a tie-in album to the TV series that never materialized.
Classy British folk foursome looking smashingly groovadelic with their shoulder-length mop tops, white suits and pink ties (the guys) and yellow flower-power wide-sleeved mini-skirt (the girl). They play in a zesty accomplished style that’s basically a xerox of The Seekers. Mostly renditions of titles like «Streets Of London», «Jesus Met The Woman At The Well», «Seeing Is Believing», «Put Your Hand In The Hand», «Everybody’s Going To Pray», «Lord Make Me An Instrument Of Your Peace», «I Will Arise And Go», even The Beatles’ «Nowhere Man». Several numbers are performed live and a few have organ and electric guitar. One of the earliest Myrrh UK releases. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
