Tame the Volcano

Description

Tame the Volcano is the fourth and final studio album by the American synthpop band Crumbächer, released on Frontline Records in October 1988, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was recorded by Dave Jahnsen at Asylomar Studios in Los Angeles, California; with Bill Baumgart and the band producing. Arranged by band members Stephen Crumbächer and Christopher Duke.

In 1990 Stephen Crumbächer released Worlds Away on Frontline Records, his sole album as the duo Crumbächer-Duke, followed by a solo album entitled Take It In in 1991. In 1992 Frontline Records released the compilation album Time After Time.

Stephen Crumbacher will likely go on as a solo artist from here, so he poignantly dedicates ‘Tame the Volcano’ to his group: “I’m saving the best until the end/ once more with feeling/ and once more, for the band.” In many ways, it is Crumbacher’s best-crafted, polished ensemble effort reflecting its namesake’s fondness for catchy melodies, Tin Pan Alley harmonies, and theatre slang.

Stephen Crumbacher works best when his tendency toward cuteness gets roughed up by a co-writer. With help from guitarist Chris Duke, «Release Me» burns with guitar-fueled intensity; «Waiting For You» and «Rainy Season» brim over with tunefulness, while «Reckless Boys and Bad, Bad Girls» sounds too much like Miami Sound Machine for my taste.

Tame the Volcano takes its cue from certain Polynesian tribes who sacrifice virgins to appease angry volcanic gods, and likens this to recent events in the evangelical world. It’s funnier than it was probably intended to be, done to wonderful excess, Carmen Miranda style, complete with monkeys and toucans. [Mark Eischer, CCM, January 1989]

This video was put together for the Tame the Volcano album release party back in 1988 from VHS tapes using a couple of VCRs to edit (so please excuse the crudeness of the editing and the video quality). We hope you enjoy a glimpse into the process of recording our last album, but most of all we hope you have as much fun watching it as we had making it.
