Heart Like Feathers is the fourth full-length studio album by the American singer and songwriter Robert Deeble, released on Dead Letter Records in April 2013 on CD/DVD (though pre-released on CD 2/7/2012). The album was recorded on 2-inch tape at Type Foundry Studios in Portland. All tracks recorded live with final vocals and strings tracked separately. Produced by Dylan Magierek (the founder of the Badman Recordings Co.) with Adam Selzer. Special guests featured on the album are Victoria Williams, Ric Hordinski, Stephen Hodges, and Lotte Kestner (Anna-Lynne Williams).
This is Mr Deeble’s sixth album and he’s definitely got a firm grip on his style now. While other artists may flounder with different directions at this point, Robert has mastered his style of calming, quiet yet percussive songs. The album seems almost like a compilation of Pavement’s slower songs with booming drums and slurred vocals defining the attitude of the pieces. «Weeds», the fifth track, seems an ideal representative of the album; the mood is that of the majority of the songs (calm and sullen) and the groove chugs along with the instruments. There are a great deal of other artists who have contributed to this singer/songwriter’s album, including Victoria Williams and Ric Hordinski (singer of Monk). «The Colours Of Dying» is set apart from the rest of the album by being very largely percussion based and having some very strange instrumentation with the bridge showing an aboriginal sound.
