Take 6

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American a cappella gospel music sextet Take 6 was released on Reprise Records in 1988, a Warner Communications Company.

The album won the vocal group their first two Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Soul Gospel Performance by a Duo, Group, Choir, or Chorus. It also earned the group their first three Dove Awards for Group of the Year, Contemporary Black Gospel Album of the Year, and Contemporary Black Gospel Song of the Year.

Brilliant collection of Gospel doo wop numbers that instantly captures the listener’s attention. Vocals are orchestrated beautifully – each and every track is an undeniable gem. «Spread Love» and «Gold Mine» are the album’s most accessible tracks, but don’t miss «David And Goliath» and «If We Ever». A must! [CashBox Magazine, Vol. LI – No. 37, March 19, 1988 (Album Releases/Feature Picks)]

Cool. It’s hard to achieve in music. Even harder in Christian music. But now you can add Take 6 to the ranks of cool music.

This debut release features their slick, a cappella mix of jazz, R&B, do-wop and gospel. The smooth, fluid harmonies of these six black men certainly don’t need musical accompaniement (unless you count snapping fingers as instruments).

The songs take you from slick R&B to smooth jazz to heartfelt spirituals to flowing ballads. Some of the songs are traditional negro spirituals, like «Milky-White Way», «Mary», and «Get Away Jordan». Others are originals written by the group members, like «Gold Mine» and «Spread Love». They even perform a beautiful rendition of Ralph Carmichael’s «A Quiet Place».

However, because this is a first album, there are some weaknesses. The songs tend to be too long. And a cappella can get old fast. Shorter songs will alleviate that problem. The high tenor is mixed a bit too loud, especially noticeable if you have this record cranked (especially in your car).

These are relatively minor points considering the overall quality of ‘Take 6’. My biggest fear is that people won’t take this group seriously. While Warner Brothers is sure to get Take 6 a hearing in the mainstream market, some people might consider this more a spiritual novelty than honest-to-God Truth. Take 6 has quite a task of convincing the world that this isn’t just “gospel music” and that they truly believe every word. [Mike Atkinson, CCM, April 1988]
