John Ylvisaker and Edith Norberg – Contemporary Sounds

Description

Contemporary Sounds, sub-titled Service of Holy Communion – Songs from Contemporary Worship 1, is an album by the American singer and songwriter John Ylvisaker with director Edith Norberg, released on Carillon Recordings in 1971. The album was recorded and mastered by Sound 80 Inc., Minneapolis.

Solo voices: Ronald Flugum, Sharron Rome, Melissa O’Neill, Steve Anderson, and John Ylvisaker. Instrumentalists directed by John Ylvisaker. Choir Director (Carillon Singers & Carillon Choristers [Children]): Edith Norberg. Celebrant: Rev. Robert Ross.

This album contains music for contemporary worship services. It is a result of efforts by the International Consultation on English Texts (ICET) and the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship (ILCW) to provide up-to-date translations, text revisions, and new hymns for Christian churches. Four musical settings were commissioned: Setting One is in the diatonic dissonant style of much twentieth century music; Setting two, a hymnic style familiar to many church groups in America; Setting Three, an unaccompanied plainsong style; and Setting Four, recorded here, what could be called a popular, traditional style, flexible enough to be sung with simple guitar-autoharp accompaniment or with full instrumentation (as on this recording), organ, piano, guitar, bass, brass and woodwinds.

Unique to Setting Four is the deliberate intensifying of musical drive as the service progresses. The music feeds on itself and builds to natural climax at the “Thanksgiving.” It all begins with a rather conservative, chorale-like canticle from Revelation, “Worthy Is Christ, The Lamb.” (ILCW) Although the “Gloria” is traditionally used, a mood of victorious celebration is characteristic of many church festivals, and it was felt that such as expression should be provided for. A “hymn of the day” is called for during the proclamation part of the service. A fine tune from Contemporary Worship I (ILCW), “Earth And All Stars,” has been included. The use of guitar and recorder gives a traditional sound to this lively melody.
