Simply Nothing is the major label debut album by the American singer and songwriter Shawn McDonald, released on Sparrow Records in 2004, manufactured by EMI CMG Label Group, distributed by EMI CMG Distribution. Also marketed and distributed in the EU by Kingsway Communications Ltd. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Christopher Stevens at FabMusic in Springfield, Oregon. All songs written by Shawn McDonald except track 1 co-written with Paul Wright and tracks 2, 3, and 8 co-written with Christopher Stevens.

This doesn’t sound like a debut! Shawn McDonald melds effortlessly between singing and rapping like an un-vocoded Craig David, or a slightly more gravelly Bedingfield (Daniel, not Natasha!). The setup here is acoustic guitar and one voice, backing is subtle but interesting, and the production style and electronic touches along with the light soul/hip-hop edge give the whole thing real crossover appeal. «Gravity» was released in the US as a single and it’s the most instantly grabbing track here. Lyrics throughout are thoughtful and open. Shawn McDonald is not just good to listen to; he’s worth listening to. [Sue Rann, Cross Rhythms, December 2004]
